Travel eSIM not working after landing? A safe troubleshooting guide

Use this calm, ordered check to confirm the active data line, roaming setting, and network registration before you delete an eSIM profile or share activation details.

Start with the safe rule: do not delete the eSIM yet

A missing connection after landing is usually a settings, coverage, or registration problem—not a reason to erase the profile immediately. Some activation details can be single-use, so deleting a working or partly installed profile can turn a recoverable issue into a support case.

Keep the QR code, direct installation link, SM-DP+ address, and activation code private. Do not post them in a review, social message, or public support thread. If support needs to investigate, use JETZIO’s verified support route and share only the details it specifically requests.

Setting names, activation rules, and coverage differ by device and plan. The instructions supplied with the exact purchased plan take priority.

Use this five-step arrival check

Work through the checks in order while you still have airport, hotel, or another trusted Wi-Fi connection. After each change, wait briefly and test one lightweight webpage or map with Wi-Fi switched off. Stop as soon as the travel line works.

  • 1. Confirm you are inside the exact package’s stated country or region coverage. A plan name alone is not proof that every stop or territory is included.
  • 2. Check that the travel eSIM is enabled and that it is selected as the mobile-data line—not just installed on the device.
  • 3. Turn on data roaming for the travel eSIM only when the package instructions require it. Keep data roaming off for the home line if you do not want it used for data abroad.
  • 4. Disable automatic mobile-data switching or its equivalent before the test, so the phone cannot silently fall back to the home line.
  • 5. Allow the phone time to register. Toggle airplane mode once, then turn it off and test again before trying a device restart.

Make sure the phone is using the intended data line

On iPhone, Apple documents choosing the data line from Settings, then Cellular, then Cellular Data. Apple also notes that compatible models can use a travel eSIM alongside a home line, but keeping both lines on may still expose the home line to carrier charges depending on how it is configured.

On a Google Pixel, the documented route for adding or managing an eSIM is Settings, Network & internet, SIMs. Pixel also documents that only one SIM is the default data line at a time. Other Android brands use different labels, so use the device manufacturer’s instructions rather than guessing from a different model.

Check the plan conditions before changing advanced settings

Read the package information delivered with the purchase: destination coverage, validity, activation condition, named network information, and whether data roaming is required. A profile can install correctly but remain unable to connect if validity has not started, the traveller is outside covered territory, the data allowance is exhausted, or the required data setting is off.

Do not change APN or network-selection settings unless the plan’s own instructions explicitly require it. Those settings vary by provider; copying a value from an unrelated guide can make diagnosis harder.

When to stop troubleshooting and contact support

Contact support if the travel eSIM is enabled, selected for data, configured according to its instructions, and still cannot connect inside a listed coverage area after the arrival check. Do not factory-reset the phone as an eSIM fix, and do not erase the profile unless verified support has confirmed that it is safe for your specific package.

A useful support message includes the destination country, plan name, device model, operating-system version, the exact error or network indicator, and which step failed. Do not send a QR image, activation code, passport details, full card number, or account password.

How this guide was prepared

This guide was prepared by JETZIO’s travel research team on 22 October 2026. The device-setting examples are checked against the current Apple and Google Pixel support pages linked below. Network registration, plan activation, coverage, and the exact setting names can vary by provider, device, operating-system version, and destination. Follow the instructions delivered with the exact plan; do not remove a profile or share activation details unless verified support tells you to do so.
